khaman

Fool-Proof Khaman Dhokla

Khaman dhokla is a dish I make weekly at home without fail. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this dish it’s basically a savory steamed chickpea flour sponge cake tempered with spices. My whole family loves khaman so much so that I find myself having to make 6+ trays of them every time we have a family dinner or get together.  In fact, every single time I visit my mom I make a whole batch because she absolutely loves my khaman and my mother is no easy critic to please! It’s super easy to make and the recipe I have come up with is practically fool-proof! You can even make it in the microwave to save time and clean up. Do try it and let me know what you think!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Soya Chunks, they are just like TVP as well as high in protein and isoflavonoids. Lasanu Marchu

Spicy Garlic Chutney-Lasanyu Marchu

Spicy Garlic Chutney or Lasanyu Marchu as we Gujaratis call it, is a MUST HAVE condiment in my household. It’s similar to Thecha Chutney from Maharastra but I will always prefer the Gujarati version. As far back as I can remember a jar of garlic chutney was always in our fridge. I put this in everything from dal, spreading it on my dosa to adding a dollop of it into my pav bhaji! In fact, give me some lasanyu marchu with roti and I’m set! Growing up my family would mix cream cheese and this chutney together, slather it on some Italian bread and bake it! The adults would enjoy it with their cuppa chai and we kids would eat it with milk! Yes! I was introduced to spicy food very early on in life! It’s such a versatile chutney that you won’t know how you’ve gone without it all your life! I’ve added a few notes at the end of the recipe to better help you as well!  Do try it out and let me know what you think and don’t forget to tag me @themommyspice on Instagram if you do! I love seeing all of your creations!

Indian Spiced Hashbrowns

Indian Spiced Hashbrowns

Indian Spiced Hashbrowns are a Sunday MUST in my house! I mean come on, who doesn’t love Hashbrowns?  It pleases even the pickiest eaters, including young children!  I came up with the idea, to add Indian spices to the mix after regular hashbrowns started to become a bit boring. I love how the spices give the hashbrowns a bit of warmth and spice. I make a huge batch of these to last at least two to three days. I love them so much that I could eat them on their own without any eggs or accompaniments. Hope you guys enjoy them as much as my family and I do!

Sweet and Spicy Gujarati Kadhi

Sweet and Spicy Gujarati Kadhi

Kadhi can be compared to a creamy, tangy, and spicy soup if you will. I have always looked at kadhi as comfort food. In India Kadhi comes in many variations, Punjabi Kadhi has Pakora(dumplings) in it and Sindhi Kadhi is sort of similar to Sambhar or Dal.  I remember the first time I had Punjabi Kadhi, I found it quite weird that there was “bhaajiya”(pakora) in my Kadhi. I have since fallen in love with my husband’s Punjabi Kadhi,  although the recipe below will always be my first choice compared to any other kadhi EVER! This particular recipe is for Gujarati Kadhi, just like my mama makes! In my family, we enjoy eating kadhi with a steaming helping of Basmati Rice or Khichdi. You can drink it as soup, eat it with roti or serve it over rice or khichdi, completely your choice!

Zesty Masala Rice

Zesty Masala Rice

When my husband and I are in the mood for something quick and delicious, this Zesty Masala Rice is on top of our list. I’m a sucker for vegetables and rice so whats better than spicing it up a bit? It’s a quick dish that will leave your tastebuds crying out for more. Try it out for yourselves and see what I’m talking about!

chickpea curry

Authentic Punjabi Chole

I grew up eating amazing Gujarati food cooked by my mother. It was only until I was older that I was introduced to Punjabi food and that was usually at a restaurant. Punjabi food has literally taken over almost every single Indian restaurant menu! I married into a Punjabi family and needless to say the food is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Oh and not having to go out to a restaurant to eat it is a major plus. Did you know that real authentic chole will always be a dark color as opposed to a red tinged curry? Look out for the imposters! Thus far I have posted recipes for mostly non vegetarians but that’s all about to change. This Authentic Chole Recipe (Chickpea Curry) has been passed down for generations in my husbands family. I wish I could take credit for it but I cannot, it was all hubby who cooked this. My only addition was being his sous chef! I mean seriously what’s better for a relationship than a couple who cooks together? From my family to yours, we hope you enjoy this amazing chole recipe.
