Babies First Holi and 6 Month Birthday!

Happy 6 Month Birthday Baby J and Happy Holi!

Today marks the day J turns six months old and it’s Holi yay! I have no idea where the time went! I still remember the moment he was born like it was yesterday. Everything with him has changed, including the sound of his cries to his temperament. I love seeing him rolling over, trying to crawl around the house. He now eats pureed food, well at least some it of it, most of the food ends up outside of his mouth! I stare at him in awe sometimes wondering how much more he can amaze me.

His favorites words are Da Da Da, umm did we forget MA MA MA. You know the crazy woman who spends all day taking care of you, dealing with your tantrums, crying and cleaning up your oops potty accidents! J has been able to scoot from one side of the room to another for about 1.5 months now Which in turn has me getting up every few minutes trying to move him back to a safe spot.

He also puts everything he can get his hand on, and I do mean everything! J has been teething since he was four months old and I’m proud to say he now has 2 of his bottom teeth. His baby teeth are adorable and all except when he tries to bite your finger (it hurts)!  I post stories about his daily antics every day on Instagram so make sure you follow along @themommyspice.

Today is also extra special because it’s HOLI!

Holi is a Hindu spring festival celebrated in India and around the world. It’s also known as the “festival of colors” or Dhuleti as us Gujaratis call it. Dhuleti signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive day to meet others, play, laugh, forget and forgive, and repair strained relationships.

You could compare it to the color run, but with a greater significance times ten.  In India, Holi is a national holiday and most places are closed to enjoy the festival.

The festival of Holi is also sort of like giving thanks for a good harvest of crops to farmers. It lasts for a night and a day, and usually falls somewhere between the end of February and the middle of March. The first evening is known as Holika Dahan or Chhoti Holi and the following day as Holi, Rangwali Holi, Dhuleti(Gujarati), Dhulandi, or Phagwah(West Indies).

I remember when I was younger, immediately coming home from school, dropping my backpack on the floor and going out to play with the vividly colored powder along with the rest of the neighborhood kids.

I don’t know if its still done, but I remember putting the powder and water into those water shooter guns and spraying everyone around you with color. We had tons of fun for hours upon hours.

My mother was not happy washing my clothes when I returned home, but it was so much fun! Nowadays things have changed due to the baby being born. My family and I usually end up going to one of the numerous Holi Festivals in the Tri-State area. This year  J is still too young to be around a big crowd. Therefore; we decided it would be best to visit the mandir(Hindu house of worship) and call it a day. I hope and pray that as he gets older that he will enjoy the festival of colors as much as I have all these years! Infusing the rich Indian culture into my children is a must for my husband and I. Stay tuned for more posts on culture and what Baby J has been up to.

Happy Holi Everyone!
